The Environment

Indigenous forests of yellowwood and age-old ironwood interspersed with wetlands and coastal fynbos vegetation make Pezula a natural paradise and every aspect of the development reflects the developers' sensitivity and commitment to preserving this unique and beautiful property.

This commitment began with the launch, five years ago, of the largest private alien removal programme ever seen in Southern Africa. To date some 400 hectares of land have been cleared of commercial pine and blue gum forests and rehabilitated with indigenous vegetation.

As a result, the natural fynbos and forest vegetation has reappeared together with local wildlife, including many bird and small mammal species.

Pezula's commitment to the environment has been recognised with numerous international awards including the 2005 Homes Overseas Award for the Most Environmentally Aware Development in the World. In 2006 Pezula Private Estate was awarded the 2006 IAIAsa Premium Award for excellence in environmental management in project execution.

The estate is complemented by a botanical garden representing all plants found in the sub-tropical Afromontane forests of the Southern Cape.

Recently Pezula Private Estate was officially registered with CapeNature as part of The Knysna Coastal Conservancy, together with its surrounding areas. Comprising some 880 hectares of land, the conservancy incorporates all the different property usages on Pezula as well as the adjacent Sparrebosch Home Owners Association. Initiated by Jessica Hayes, Pezula Private Estate environmental manager, the conservancy's main aims are the conservation of natural resources, the extension of a conservation area network, and the creation of increased public awareness regarding wise management of the natural environment.
